How to get press coverage for your indie launch without a PR agency

Most tech journalists ignore generic press releases. They receive hundreds of automated pitches every day, most of which end up straight in the spam folder. If you want your software product covered by niche publications and industry newsletters, you do not need a five-thousand-pound PR retainer. You need a targeted media list, a compelling narrative, and tangible proof of market interest.

Find the specific writers who cover your exact niche

Sending emails to generic newsroom contacts is a waste of time. Instead, search for articles covering your direct competitors or the specific workflow problem your software solves. Build a focused spreadsheet of 15 to 20 journalists who have written about your industry in the last six months.

  • Check author bylines: Look beyond major outlets to specialised tech blogs, regional business sites, and popular Substack newsletters.
  • Verify recent activity: Ensure the writer is still actively covering software tools and digital products.
  • Find direct contact details: Search personal websites or social profiles for direct email addresses rather than web forms.

Pitch the narrative, not your feature list

Journalists cover market shifts, interesting data, and founder stories. They do not care about your clean dashboard or standard settings page. Keep your pitch under 200 words and structure it around three core elements:

  • The shift: What recent change in the market makes existing software outdated or unnecessarily expensive?
  • The evidence: What surprising insight or metric did you discover while building the product?
  • The solution: How your product solves this problem, explained in two concise sentences without buzzwords.

Provide a frictionless press kit

Make a journalist's job as simple as possible. When pitching under embargo five days before your launch, include a link to a shared cloud folder containing organized media assets. Avoid attaching heavy files directly to the email, as this triggers spam filters.

  • Product screenshots: Crisp, uncropped images showing the core interface in action.
  • Founder headshots: High-resolution photos on a clear background.
  • Fact sheet: A single document listing pricing tiers, launch date, key metrics, and founder background.

Use early launch momentum as proof

Writers prefer covering products that already have community backing. Use early metrics from your public launch—such as directory upvotes, initial active users, or tournament round wins—to demonstrate momentum in your follow-up email. A single follow-up three days after your initial pitch is sufficient. If they do not respond, respect their time and move on.

Building initial social proof is the best way to catch a journalist's eye. Submit your product to LaunchNest to enter our community-voted tournament bracket and collect the traction metrics you need for press outreach.
